Just because the temperature outside is rising doesn’t mean your energy bills have to rise too! Practicing energy conservation in your home can help you lower your energy costs and increase your comfort this summer ... and every season!
So, whether you’re enjoying fun in the sun or have it made in the shade, here are 6 easy tips to help you lower your energy costs that don’t require spending a single penny!
- Keep drapes, blinds and shades closed during the day to block out the sun and open them at night.
- Clear furniture, rugs, and curtains away from air conditioning vents.
- Keep your thermostat setting as high as possible. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends a baseline summer thermostat setting of 78°.
- Cook on the outdoor grill to keep cooking heat outside the home.
- When cooking inside, use a microwave instead of a conventional oven. It uses less than half the power and cooks food in about one-fourth the time.
- Run your ceiling fan, if you have one, alongside your A/C. This can cut your cooling costs by 12% to 20%. Because the breeze creates a wind-chill effect on your skin, you can raise your thermostat by 4° without sacrificing comfort. Since every 1° increase reduces cooling costs by 3% to 5%, this yields significant savings.
