Natural Gas Safety Tips

  1. Schedule repairs and tune-ups: All repairs to your natural gas equipment need to be done by a certified professional. Call Spring Brook Ice & Fuel to service your equipment to check for leaks.

  2. Install carbon monoxide detectors: Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that is virtually impossible to detect without a working CO detector. Protect your family against the effects of a carbon monoxide leak by installing and testing carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home.

  3. Know what natural gas smells like: Natural gas is treated with mercaptan to give it a distinctive sulfuric, or rotten egg-like odor. If you ever notice that smell in or around your house – or even outside – you should leave the area immediately and call the police, fire department and gas utility. See our next tip for more information on what to do in case of a leak.

  4. Protect your home and family in case of a leak: There are very specific steps you should take if you suspect a gas leak.

    • No flames, sparks, or light switches – do not turn any lights on or off, do not use your phone in the vicinity, do not activate any electronic devices. Just …

    • Leave the area immediately - gather your loved ones and leave the property. You should have an emergency plan and meeting place for your household. Now is the time to use it.

    • Report the leak to 911 and our company – As soon as you are a safe distance away, call 911 to report a suspected gas leak. Then call our emergency service number: (860) 225-6491. Someone will respond to your emergency call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

    • Do not return to the building or area – Do not go back into the building for any reason until the emergency services teams have determined it is safe to do so.

    • Have your system checked! Our team will be on their way as soon as you call in the emergency. Do not turn your heating system or any other appliances on until we have checked the system for any mechanical issues.
