When you think of using ice during the summer, you’re probably thinking about ice cubes for drinks, coolers, party trays -- and even for ice bags for boo-boos when the kids fall down. What people don’t think of is using dry ice during the summer.
Dry ice from Spring Brook Ice & Fuel has many uses for summer:
- Put it in your campsite or beach cooler: Place the dry ice at the bottom, cover it with a thick insulator like cardboard or newspaper, and pack regular ice or frozen items on top.
- Flash-freeze perishables: If you hunt, fish, or preserve fruits and veggies from your garden, dry ice flash-freezes items much faster than standard freezers, preventing spoilage and keeping food fresh longer.
- Pack perishables in it during power outages: Pack your perishables tightly around dry ice blocks to keep them safe from spoiling.

- Make your own carbonated beverages: Dry ice can carbonate liquids quickly because it is solid carbon dioxide that turns directly into gas (sublimation). When added to water or juice, the released CO₂ dissolves into the liquid, creating effervescence.

- Always wear heavy-duty or insulated gloves when handling dry ice, as its -109°F temperature can instantly cause frostbite.
- Never seal dry ice in a completely airtight container or cooler, as the expanding CO₂ gas poses a risk of rupture.
- Always use and store dry ice in well-ventilated areas to prevent oxygen displacement.
