Spring Brook Ice & Fuel is proud to offer a variety of natural gas services to our Central Connecticut friends and neighbors, including conversions, equipment installations, maintenance, and repair services. And because safety is our #1 priority, it is important for our natural gas customers to follow appropriate safety practices in the event of a gas leak.
There are very specific steps you should take if you suspect a gas leak. Please share them with family members:
- First, know what natural gas smells like: Natural gas is treated with mercaptan to give it a distinctive sulfuric, or rotten egg-like odor. If you ever notice that smell in or around your house – or even outside – you should leave the area immediately and call the police, fire department and gas utility.
- Do not turn any lights on or off, do not use your phone in the vicinity, and do not activate any electronic devices: You don’t want any sparks igniting the gas!
- Leave the area immediately: Gather your loved ones and pets and leave the property. Every family should have an emergency plan and meeting place for your household.
- Report the leak to 911 and to Spring Brook Ice & Fuel: As soon as you are a safe distance away, call 911 to report a suspected gas leak. Then call our emergency service number: (860) 225-6491. Someone will respond to your emergency call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
- Do not return to the building or area for any reason: Wait until the emergency services teams have determined it is safe to do so.
- Have your heating system checked: Our team will be on their way as soon as you call in the emergency. Do not turn your heating system or any other appliances on until we have checked the system for any mechanical issues.
We want to emphasize that calling Spring Brook Ice and Fuel for annual maintenance and repairs of your gas heating equipment is a smart way to check for gas leaks before they happen.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call us at (860) 225-6491 to learn more about natural gas safety.
