What Exactly Is Dry Ice?
Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide at a temperature of -109.3°F. This ice form is recommended for keeping items frozen when a freezer is not available. It is colder than regular ice because it’s a frozen gas, and as it dissolves it goes to a gaseous state, which means it doesn’t leave a puddle of water behind. Dry ice is commonly used for shipping foods and is a great way to keep items frozen while camping or traveling. In addition, you can use dry ice for:
- Outdoor recreation: hunting, fishing, boating
- Keeping perishable goods cold during power outages
- Special effects: creating “fog,” school science projects, Halloween, etc.
IMPORTANT: When handling dry ice, it’s critical to exercise extreme caution. If dry ice comes in contact with skin, it will freeze the skin cells, which causes an injury similar to a burn. Those who handle dry ice should ALWAYS wear cloth or leather work gloves, oven mitts, or use a kitchen or bath towel. Please remember to always protect your skin!
